Scholarship Winners 2006
- Alicia Cardinez
Alicia Cardinez graduated from Wharton High School and plans to attend the University of South Florida to study criminology. Alicia is a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and her school’s Scholarship club. She is also a member of the executive board for Teen Council, which focuses on doing volunteer work within the community. All of Alicia’s hard work has not gone unnoticed; she was awarded Who’s Who among young America, Congress Leadership Award and the Academic Letter.
She credits her success to her outgoing personality and her mother, who inspires her on a daily basis and who has pushed her to succeed. Alicia believes that education is the key to success and teaches you to think critically and outside the box.
- Kim Dau
Kim Dau graduated with honors from Robinson High School and plans to attend the University of South Florida to study Business Marketing. Kim has been a three-year member of the National Honor Society, where she held the office of vice president. She is also secretary of her graduating class and captain of her high school’s volleyball and tennis teams.
While holding a part-time job, she volunteers for Toys for Tots, Relay for Life and Metropolitan Ministries. This year, she was recognized by Robinson High School for her determination and hard work by being named Ms. Robinson. Kim enjoys learning and wants to give back to the community that has helped shape her today. She believes there is no experience more rewarding than expanding the minds of others.
- Ayesha Farooq
Ayesha Farooq graduated from King High School and plans to attend the University of South Florida to study Medicine and Biomedical Engineering. Ayesha has spent over 200 hours volunteering at the Tampa VA Medical Center, where she assisted patients with spinal cord injuries. She has also volunteered for United Cerebral Palsy and Children’s Emergency Shelter in Tampa.
Ayesha is the founder and president of SAMOSA club at King High School, a club that encourages diversity and helps spread multi-culturalism. She is also a member of the International Baccalaureate Program and National Honor Society. One of her goals in life is to improve the status of women, especially in her native Pakistan. She hopes her success of becoming a cardiac surgeon will show the girls of her culture that education opens doors and brings freedom.
- Clarens Jarbath
Clarens Jarbath graduated from Brandon High School and will attend Florida State University. To fulfill a fascination for the heart, he plans to study medicine to become a cardiologist. Clarens is a member of the Spanish Honor Society and vice president of the French Honor Society. He is also a member of the National Honor Society and earned an Academic Letter.
Clarens is a GAP & STRIDES mentor. His leadership skills are already well under development through his mentoring of freshman who have the potential of becoming Advanced Placement students. He also volunteers at the Brandon Regional library and the Boys and Girls club. As a child, when Clarens played with his brother and sister, he was always the doctor they would call for emergencies. Through his academic achievements and kind nature, he surely will make a successful doctor.
- Saraia Lamb
Saraia Lamb is a graduate of South County Career Center and will attend the University of South Florida in the fall. Saraia is the secretary and historian of her school’s government organization, president of the Student Advisory Committee, captain of the Salvation Army and Red Cross Blood Drive and president of Peer Mediation program.
She demonstrates her leadership in the classroom as a member of the National Honor Society, Honor roll and National Honors Scholar. Saraia dreams of becoming an Emergency Medical Technician/Registered Nurse so she can make a difference in people’s lives.
- Martey McIntyre
Martey McIntyre is a 2006 graduate of Plant City High School and plans to attend Florida State University where he wants to earn a degree in accounting. Martey is president of Plant City Community Choir as well as president of The Gospel Club. He is a member of The Key Club and Future Business Leaders of America.
He gives his time to help others by volunteering once a week at the United Food Bank and Boys and Girls Club youth program during the summer. Because of his leadership in the school, church and community, Martey was selected by Plant City High School faculty and peers to be a Senior Superlative. Martey also holds a part-time job at McDonalds and already has been promoted to Floor Supervisor.
- Juliana McVay
Juliana McVay is a 2006 graduate from Chamberlain High School and plans to attend Hillsborough Community College in the fall to study nursing. Juliana is a member of the National and Beta Honor Societies. She takes her leadership roles very seriously as vice president for Fellowship of Christian Athletes as a lettered athlete in swimming and track. She is also historian of Student Advisory Committee and a standing member of Students Against Destructive Decisions.
Juliana is active outside the classroom with one hundred and twenty eight hours of community service. She has volunteered for Relay for Life, Light the Night and Lowry Park Halloween and Christmas Events. She has also spent the past four years helping to clean the Hillsborough River. Juliana has always enjoyed helping people and wants to continue that path.
- Ashley Plum
Ashley Plum graduated from Gaither High School and plans to attend Hillsborough Community College in the fall. Ashley is a very well-rounded student who is involved in many school organizations, including Peacemakers, Best Buddies, Fellowship of Christian Students and Student Advisory Committee.
In her senior year, she learned to mentor other students going through difficult times and became a highly skilled peer mediator. She served as vice president of Peacemakers and secretary of Best Buddies. Ashley’s passion for the well-being of others compliments her dream of becoming a social worker.
- Amanda Reyes
Amanda Reyes is a 2006 graduate from Hillsborough High School and plans to attend the University of Florida to study medicine. Amanda has demonstrated exemplary academic abilities as a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Art Honor Society and Psychology Honor Society. She served as membership chair for the National Honor Society and treasurer for the Psychology Honor Society.
Despite taking on a heavy academic schedule, she was a devoted member of her high school’s crew team. She also took the time to volunteer as a Sunday school teacher, Habitat for Humanity and Manor Care Nursing Home.
Amanda enjoys working with children and wants to become a child psychiatrist. She believes education and hard-work is the key to success.
- Apolonia Reza
Apolonia Reza is a 2006 graduate of East Bay High School and plans to attend Florida State University to study dietetics. Apolonia is a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club and Mu Alpha Theta. She received the Key Scholar Award because of her strong academic excellence.
She is an active member in her church and Impacto, a Hispanic community service club. Apolonia has spent over 300 hours of her time volunteering at Ruskin Branch Library and other admirable causes. Apolonia took an interest in healthy eating at a young age. One of her goals is to enrich and aid in the health and longevity of the Hispanic community, who often suffer from diseases, such as diabetes.
- Wendy Salgado
Wendy Salgado graduated from Jefferson High School and plans to attend Hillsborough Community College to study Psychology. Wendy is a member of the National Honor Society, FPSA, which is a law and criminal justice academy club and is treasurer of Club Shanti. She volunteers in Jefferson’s media center after school.
Wendy believes determination and hard work are the way to reach personal goals. She knows striving for success is never easy, but that’s what makes it truly worth it. Wendy strives to succeed everyday and wants to make her parents proud.
- Brittany Sapp
Brittany Sapp graduated from Durant Senior High School and plans to attend Hillsborough Community College. Brittany maintained her honor role status while participating in charity walks for March of Dimes and ALS. She was also an active member in her church group Youth Alive. While holding a part-time job at Publix, she participated in her high school’s cross country team and went to district competition.
Brittany believes the key to her future is an education. She wishes to pursue a degree in secondary education or nursing so she can help others. Brittany has always enjoyed writing and hopes to write a novel of her own one day.
- John Sepulveda
John Sepulveda is a 2006 graduate from Leto High School and plans to attend the University of South Florida to obtain a degree in International Studies & Business. John is a member of National Honor Society, French Honor Society, Beta Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta. He is also president of the Spanish National Honor Society, which comes as no surprise because he received five out of five in the Advanced Placement Spanish College Board Exam.
While holding a part-time job, John has dedicated over 140 hours of community service to cleaning up the community. John aspires to be the voice for an American company in a foreign country. His dream job includes a mix of business, language and culture. John wants to be a successful business man so he can provide a good retirement for his parents.
- Curtis Suchan
Curtis Suchan is a 2006 graduate from Bloomingdale High School and plans to attend Hillsborough Community College then the University of Florida to study sports management. Curtis is a natural athlete and very involved in his high school’s athletic program. He has lettered in both football and baseball. Curtis demonstrates his leadership skills as captain of his football team.
Curtis’ outgoing personality landed him a role in his high school play - Wonderful Town. And when he’s not acting or playing sports, he is busy coaching little league. Curtis truly enjoys the sports industry and through his athletic ability and leadership skills, he would make a fantastic sports agent. His big heart and “can do” attitude is what has helped him to succeed.
