Weatherization Training Courses

Building Analyst - As part of the Building Analyst course, you will go beyond a traditional energy audit to perform comprehensive, whole-home assessments, identify problems at the root cause and prescribe and prioritize solutions based on building science.

The course covers the fundamentals of home performance evaluation and whole-home retrofit planning and execution.  It focuses on the “house as a system” concept, including mechanical equipment and the building envelope.

Once training is complete, individuals should know how to identify problems, their root causes, how to fix them without compromising other systems in the house and finally and will know how to coordinate and implement a repair plan between the various contractors needed to complete the work.

Each field of training ends with an examination process administered to individuals by a BPI affiliate, to prove knowledge, skills and professional competency in the building performance industry designations. Developed by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), this is a nationally recognized industry certification through the Building Performance Institute (BPI).

(Master Level – 80 Hours)

Weatherization Auditor - The Weatherization Auditor course covers diagnostic approaches to weatherization, advanced diagnostics, heating, combustion analysis and retrofitting of oil and gas, home energy auditing, Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) standards, in addition to applicable field experience.

Weatherization auditors must understand the roles of installers and crew chiefs with regard to the Florida Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) priority list and material selection for remediation.

In addition, weatherization auditors need to have a clear understanding of how buildings perform as a system in order to accurately assess and remediate existing structures rather than new construction that most other auditors are used to working within other energy related programs.

Prequalified candidates for this course will be required to demonstrate, through written and hands-on assessments, the knowledge, understanding and physical application of the minimum core competencies of the Auditor certification standards as determined by NCCER and BPI.

(Advanced Level – 140 Hours)

Weatherization Installer - The Weatherization Installer course covers weatherization tactics, lead safe work practices, crew safety, and Weatherization Assistance Program standards and provides additional OSHA certification.

In addition to the familiarization process, the Installer course structure also serves as a stepping off platform into the world of weatherization. For example, trade contractors not familiar with weatherization programs may have experience installing insulation, air sealing buildings, and/or addressing moisture problems, but weatherization focuses on assessment and permanent remediation of such challenges so the end user will benefit from a more energy efficient, safer, and healthier home.

Weatherization installers also need to have a clear understanding of how buildings perform as a system in order to accurately assess and remediate existing structures rather than new construction.

Pre-qualified candidates for this course will be required to demonstrate, through written and hands-on assessments during the training, the knowledge, understanding and physical application of the minimum core competencies of the Installer certification standards as determined by NCCER and BPI.

(Intermediate Level – 40 Hours)
