Extended unemployment Benefits

The Agency for Workforce Innovation announced that an estimated 250,000 unemployed Floridians will be eligible for extended unemployment benefits.  Payments will begin in early July and will be made retroactive to February 22 for eligible claimants.  For more information about the extended benefits, click here.

Cover Florida Health Care Access Program

This legislation makes affordable health coverage available to uninsured Floridians.  Cover Florida allows insurers to create health insurance products that are affordable and guaranteed to Floridians who have been without insurance for at least six months, or who are recently unemployed - even if there are pre-existing health conditions.  Click here for a link to the website.

‘The Florida Prescription Drug Price’ website 

The Florida Attorney General has developed ‘The Florida Prescription Drug Price’ website to help uninsured consumers in Florida.  This site compares the price of prescription drugs at local pharmacies that an uninsured consumer, with no discount or supplemental plan, would normally pay.  For a link to the website click here.

Florida High Tech Corridor Council’s Virtual Entrepreneur Center

Florida High Tech Corridor Council’s Virtual Entrepreneur Center is an online catalog of business resources for entrepreneurs looking to start or grow a business in Florida’s High Tech Corridor.  This resource is continually updated, so log on regularly to find the latest information about new products, services and local resources specific to your area.  The site provides links to business resources such as local permitting codes and forms, statewide corporate registration information and federal trademark law. Federal Minimum Wage Increase

Effective July 24, 2009, the federal minimum wage will increase to $7.25 per hour for all hours worked.  The federal direct wage for employees who receive tips will remain $2.13 per hour and is still superseded by the State direct wage of $4.19 per hour.  On the effective date, Florida employers must increase the minimum wage from $7.21 to $7.25 per hour.  An updated Wage Conversion poster prepared by the Agency for Workforce Innovation, Labor Market Statistics Center is now available.  The poster displays hourly wages and a conversion to weekly, monthly, and annual salaries, based on a 40-hour work week.  The posters are designed to provide at-a-glance salary figures to assist job seekers to easily understand how hourly wages convert to annual wages.  Please click here to view the poster.

High School Diplomas for Vietnam War Veterans

The 2009 Florida Legislature passed the Corporal Larry E. Smedley Vietnam Veterans High School Diploma Act.  This act, effective July 1, 2009, authorizes the Commissioner of Education to award a high school diploma to honorably discharged Vietnam War veterans and increases the opportunity for some Florida veterans to receive a high school diploma.  For more information on eligibility or for an application click here.  Information on Senate Bill 316 is available on the Legislative Home Page.
